Predicting Rain Doesn't Count
Building Arks Does
Here’s a question you probably haven’t considered:
What do Warren Buffet and the religious figure Abraham have in common?
In religious circles, Abraham is famous for saying a little and doing a lot.
This is similar to Warren Buffet’s “Noah Rule”.
Noah rule: Predicting rain doesn't count; building arks does.
This lesson is simple but deeply true. It’s intuitive. Everyone knows it.
There are similar, well-known principles about action and talk.
For example, some people will tell you that action is greater than talk.
It’s true.
But there’s more.
Another related idea is that you should do what you say you’re going to do.
That’s also obviously true, but these are different from the lesson Warren Buffet is teaching us.
What Buffet is telling us actually boils down to courage.
It’s easy to make predictions. But it requires courage to take action.
“Boring” investors have courage.
Courage to take action. Courage to be wrong. Courage to bet heavily. Courage to go against the crowd.
“Boring” investors have courage.
Thanks for reading this week’s edition of Arena.
Until we meet again, good luck being “boring”.
